במאמר מוצגת בחינה של רמת האמון של הציבור בישראל במדענים בהשוואה בין-לאומית, תוך ניתוח נתוני סקר שנערך ב-68 מדינות בקרב כ-72,000 משתתפים. הממצאים מראים כי ישראל מדורגת בתחתית המדינות שנבדקו, בייחוד בממדי הפתיחות והזולתנות, אף על פי שמדע נתפס בה כמנוע צמיחה מרכזי. האמון הנמוך של המשתתפים מישראל מתבטא גם בתמיכה מועטה במעורבות מדענים בתהליכי קבלת החלטות ציבוריות. נמצא כי גיל, הכנסה ומגדר כמעט אינם משפיעים על האמון, אך הנטייה הפוליטית ומידת הדתיות קשורות אליו באופן מובהק: בקרב בעלי השקפת עולם ימנית ודתיים האמון נמוך יותר. עם זאת, האמון במדעני אקלים בישראל דומה לממוצע העולמי, וכך גם התמיכה במדיניות סביבתית. מן המאמר עולה חשיבותו של חיזוק אמון הציבור במדענים, מתוך הבנה שהדבר חיוני לקידום שימוש במדע ובנתונים מהימנים בעת קבלת החלטות אישיות או ציבוריות. לשם כך, אנו מציעים לשפר את הייצוג של מגוון אוכלוסיות בקרב המדענים, לשלב בתהליך המדעי התייחסות כנה לחששות ולצרכים שעולים מהציבור, וללמד על אודות התהליך המדעי. 

This article presents an examination of the level of trust that the Israeli public has in scientists in comparison with other countries, based on an analysis of survey data collected in 68 countries from approximately 72,000 participants. The findings show that Israel ranks at the bottom of the countries surveyed, particularly in terms of openness and altruism, even though science is perceived as a key driver of growth. The low level of trust among Israeli participants is also reflected in their limited support for the involvement of scientists in public decision-making processes. It was found that age, income, and gender have almost no effect on trust, but political orientation and religiosity are clearly related to it: trust is lower among those with right-wing worldviews and religious people. However, trust in climate scientists in Israel is similar to the global average, as is support for environmental policy. The article highlights the importance of strengthening public trust in scientists, based on the understanding that this is essential for promoting the use of science and reliable data in personal and public decision-making. To this end, we propose improving the representation of diverse populations among scientists, incorporating sincere consideration of public concerns and needs into the scientific process, and teaching about the scientific process.
